October is Domestic Violence Awareness month. We learned from our 2024 Status of Women in Kentucky report that 45% of women in the commonwealth will experience sexual or physical violence or stalking by an intimate partner in their lifetime. Tune in to our next [Virtual] Conversations with Commissioners where Commissioner Ann Perkins, Executive Director of Safe Harbor of Northeast Kentucky, Inc. will be joined by guests Peggy Patterson, U.S. Magistrate Judge (retired), in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Kentucky, and Darlene Thomas, Executive Director @greenhouse17ky. They will discuss Domestic Violence Awareness Month and both the history and future of the anti-domestic violence movement in Kentucky.

All of your messages and feedback from the Girls Who Recover podcast Sober September series reminded me why we’re here. Together, we created a month of truth, courage, and recovery in action. I’m deeply grateful for you — and for the community we share.
Let’s keep going, ok? We have good work to do.
Throughout October, for Domestic Violence Awareness Month, we’re shifting focus to a topic that hits close to home — domestic violence, abuse, and recovery.
Before you hit play on this month’s episodes, please know this:
⚠️ Trigger warning: These stories (including my own) include themes of abuse, trauma, and survival. Listen with care. If you are actively healing from domestic violence or trauma, please pace yourself, pause when needed, and take exquisite care of your nervous system.
Here’s why this matters — and why we can’t look away:
-
1 in 3 women has experienced physical or sexual violence by an intimate partner.
-
More than 20,000 calls are made every day to domestic violence hotlines in the U.S.
-
On average, it takes 7 attempts for a victim to leave an abusive relationship permanently.

Last week, I had a powerful conversation with my dear friend and mentor Ann Perkins, the Executive Director of Safe Harbor of Eastern Kentucky. She breaks down the effects of domestic violence, why it’s so hard to leave, and how we can support survivors right now.
🎧Listen to my conversation with expert Ann Perkins here.
This is a social epidemic — and it’s devastating. And yet, as we learned from this week’s guest, Keri Hamilton, recovery and healing are both possible. Light can break through even the darkest stories, but only when we keep talking about them.
🎧Tune into my conversation with survivor Keri Hamilton here.
Here’s what we can do right now:
-
Talk to our kids — about how we are to be treated, what love really is, and what to do if they’re ever in trouble. I’ve had some hard but beautiful conversations with my girls this month, and they’ve asked the best questions. It’s never too early to teach them.
-
Keep the conversation open — at home, at work, in recovery meetings, in your communities. Shame cannot survive when we share our stories.
-
Support survivors and safe spaces.
One I love: Safe Harbor, a nonprofit serving survivors of domestic violence and their families in Kentucky and beyond. -
-
-
If you know someone currently experiencing domestic violence, ask how you can help.
If you or someone you love is in danger, please contact the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-SAFE (7233) or visit thehotline.org.
And if you know someone who’d like to share their story of recovery from domestic violence, or an expert in the field, I’d love to feature them on the Girls Who Recover podcast. Just let me know.
This month’s theme is heavy, but it's critical.... and we know that awareness creates change. Recording and releasing these episodes has stretched me — and I’ve made sure to double down on self-care. I hope you will, too.
Because when we face hard truths, we have to take care of ourselves and our joy.
I love you.
I'm so proud of you.
And I believe in your ability to create a life you absolutely love.
Dana
