SAFE HARBOR HOLDS ANNUAL
1,000 WOMEN (AND MEN) AND CORNERSTONE AWARDS LUNCHEON
Safe Harbor of Northeast Kentucky held its annual 1,000 Women (and Men) and Cornerstone Awards luncheon on Tuesday, March 12, at Bellefonte Country Club. Individuals honored with Cornerstone Awards included Jim Cantrell and Marathon Petroleum, Dianne Clement, Lynn Couchot and Heather Van Deren. The luncheon also was an opportunity for supporters to hear an update about renovation and construction projects at the domestic violence shelter as well as make financial pledges to help support Safe Harbor's programs and projects.
KDVA HONORS
FIRST LADY JANE BESHEAR
Safe Harbor staff -- including Executive Director Ann Perkins, Legal Advocate Tiffany Barker, Administrative Coordinator Mary Hill and others recently attended the annual conference sponsored by the Kentucky Domestic Violence Association and the Kentucky Association of Sexual Assault Programs. Mrs. Perkins is president of the KDVA board and presented the groups' first annual President's Award to Kentucky First Lady Jane Beshear for her work with the annual Shop and Share program. Mrs. Beshear has helped raise $1.5 million for KDVA shelters. Her goal this year is $1 million in donated food and non-perishable products, such as laundry detergent, etc. Shop and Share is held each year in February.

The Kentucky Colonels graciously awarded a grant of $17,982 to Safe Harbor of Northeast Kentucky on Thursday, September 27, during ceremonies in Lexington. Accepting the grant is Safe Harbor's Executive Director Ann Perkins.

AVON DAY OF BEAUTY
Thanks to the generosity and hard work of area Avon representatives, more than 20 residents at Safe Harbor enjoyed a Day of Beauty on Tuesday, April 30, at Bellefonte Beauty Academy in Ashland, KY. During the afternoon, participants enjoyed getting new hairstyles, having manicures and experiencing an entirely new look as they learned makeup techniques. Afterward, some of the ladies had glamour shots taken by volunteer photographers. Planning the event was Heather Hiscock along with Crystal Bailey. Safe Harbor is one of the largest domestic violence shelters and advocacy facilities in Kentucky. It works with domestic violence victims in Boyd, Greenup, Carter, Elliott and Lawrence counties in northeastern Kentucky.
KDVA CONDUCTS CERTIFICATION
TRAINING AT SAFE HARBOR
Scott Lancaster and Lisa Gabbard were at Safe Harbor on Thursday, April 25, to conduct a module in the Kentucky Domestic Violence Association's certification curriculum. The module -- Child Advocacy -- was one of five courses domestic violence advocates must complete to achieve the designation of "Certified Domestic Violence Advocate."

Lobster Fest 2012
a HUGE SUCCESS!!!!

Lobster Fest 2012 was a HUGE SUCCESS thanks to the hard work by Susan Fried and members of the Boyd County Medical Alliance. The event was held Saturday, August 18, at Bellefonte Country Club, with a sell-out crowd in attendance for great food, fellowship, fun and dancing under the stars. The proceeds from this year's event will help underwrite the cost of expansion and renovation work at Safe Harbor's Emergency Shelter.

Safe Harbor of Northeastern Kentucky is an emergency shelter and advocacy center that provides free confidential, caring and supportive services to all domestic violence and sexual assault victims in Boyd, Greenup, Carter, Lawrence and Elliott counties. Through the use of resources, education, counseling and advocacy, Safe Harbor provides a safe place for you to consider the impact domestic violence is having upon you and your family.

Safe Harbor's services are free to all victims of domestic violence. Safe Harbor provides services without regard to race, gender, national origin, age, sexual orientation or handicap.

DURING SHOP AND SHARE DAY!
Area residents were extremely generous during Shop and Share Day on Saturday, February 2, at the Ashland Kroger, Russell Kroger and Louisa Food City. The statewide event is sponsored by Kentucky First Lady Jane Beshear and helps domestic violence victims and their children at the state's 15 domestic violence shelters. More than 2,000 items were donated during the event this year between the three stores, with an overall value of more than $6,000.

Thanks to the generosity of countless individuals and organizations from across the FIVCO ADD, Christmas was a joyous one for Safe Harbor residents and their children. The week before Christmas culminated with a special party for residents and their children in the new cafeteria/kitchen area at Harbor Hill. Santa Claus was the special guest for the afternoon and enjoyed visiting with each child. Our thanks to all who helped make this year a special one at Safe Harbor.

OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
IN THE PAST 12 MONTHS
The lives of women who perished at the hands of their perpetrators last year were commemorated on Monday, Oct. 29, 5 p.m., during Safe Harbor of Northeast Kentucky’s annual Candlelight Vigil. The event was in conjunction with October’s observance of Domestic Violence Awareness Month. This year’s White Ribbon honorees included Dr. Laura Reese, for her work to bring health-care services to the Safe Harbor campus, and Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital, in recognition of the hospital’s mobile mammography unit that visits the Safe Harbor campus twice each year. The guest speaker was Dr. Reese, who also serves on Safe Harbor’s board of directors. A woman from Greenup County and one from Boyd County were part of this year’s list.
